New Year, New Self-Care

We all seem to make goals for the new year. And if you haven’t made any yet, it’s not too late to start. Instead of the typical new year’s resolutions like learning to cook, losing weight, or saving money, we’d like to suggest a different type of resolution – incorporating self-care into your everyday life.

But what is self care? Self care is anything you do to take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. It’s a great goal for the new year because it’s doable and attainable throughout the year. No matter where you are in life, you can always incorporate self care into your day. Here are a couple ideas of what self care could look like.

Change Your Morning Routine

How you start your morning can affect the rest of your day. A rushed morning where you already feel behind in your day isn’t necessarily setting yourself up for success. Taking time to slow down your morning can greatly impact your mood and day.

Changing your morning routine doesn’t have to be getting up at 5am. But it does include looking at your morning routine and seeing what small changes you can make. A good morning routine will look different for everyone, but some examples could be:

  • Prepping your breakfast and lunch the night before
  • Packing your bag the night before
  • Getting up 15 minutes earlier to get little things done
  • Making your bed
  • Reading for 10 minutes when you wake up
  • Avoiding your phone for the first hour you’re awake
  • Drink a glass of water within 10 minutes of waking up
  • Waking up at the same time everyday
  • And more

Sleep Better

Sleep care is self care. Not getting enough sleep greatly impacts your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. If you’re not getting enough quality sleep, then this is a great place to start with self care. Here are some habits that could help you sleep better:

  • Go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday
  • Make sure your bedroom is a comfortable place
  • Remove electronic devices from the bedroom
  • Avoid caffeine later in the day
  • Get some exercise

Do Something Fun

Doing at least one fun thing a day is probably one of the greatest forms of self care. Oftentimes we get too busy with our day-to-day life and get carried away with all the tasks, chores, and deadlines. When you focus on doing one thing a day that you love, you’d be surprised how quickly your mood changes day-to-day.

Doing something you enjoy daily will give you a stronger appreciation for life and also enable you to face any difficult tasks that may come your way.
